BONE SONGS
(WHISPERS)

Choreography and performance: Melissa Monteros and Wojciech Mochniej

Original lighting design: Jari Haavikko

Music: Henryk Mikołaj Górecki

Bone Songs unfolds in two acts — Whispers and The Return — and takes its title from a belief that history lives in the body itself: that the stories of our ancestors are stored in our DNA and resonate within us whether we call them forward or not. It is the first W&M work exploring the idea of “I” and “Other.”

Choreographically, it marks a pivotal moment in the W&M Physical Theatre practice — one of the artists’ first deep explorations of the grotesque as a path toward the transcendent. The work moves between intimacy and isolation, vulnerability and stark beauty, with original lighting design by Jari Haavikko and music by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki.

“Monteros and Mochniej create an enormously sensitive and physical journey into intimacy and isolation. Like two wonderfully compatible children of paradise who have strayed from their sheltered world, they offer an astonishingly beautiful interpretation of vulnerability.”

“W&M Physical Theatre are the experts on stark beauty. Their excerpt of Bone Songs: The Return was layered with poetic and austere images. The highly visual aspect of the work was matched by the authenticity of their physicality. Their performance called us to attention with its clarity and dynamic. The duet moved through a dance vocabulary characterized by dramatic shifts in energy states. W&M struck the balance between design and physicality that we often search for as choreographers — offering up work that can be felt with all of the senses.”
